Sky Within
Sound Transit Link Light Rail
McClellan Station - Seattle, Washington

Scheduled completion 2009

The location for the artwork at the station is in the end bays under the elevated guide way.  The concept is to use a combination of a painted surface with a series of chandeliers to create a contemporary grand corridor.  The artwork is an environment or atmosphere.  It bridges the gap between the architecture and the street.  The installation will provide amenities to the site by creating light, mood, and order.  It is a roof, a tent, a sky.  The piece referenced the formality of historical promenades, rooms, or gallerias but is comprised of modern abstracted elements. The painted surface will be up-lit with programmable led to create weather/color in the sky.  The LED lights are housed in the upturned cobra head surround.

Shady Liberty Footbridge
Pedestrian walkway between Shadyside and East Liberty
Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania
Proposed completion 2008

The footbridge is a path between East Liberty and Shadyside. This alternative street mixes streetscape and bridge elements The experience of walking across the bridge will be one of civilized surprise; dramatic and formal, yet playful and functional.

The elements include:

  • An undulating pathway transforms a concrete painted surface from street striping to an abstract expressionistic painting on the ground plane.
  • Landscape and lighting flank the central scalloped path. The landscaped area is outboard of the safety fence.
  • The safety fence curves around the landscape areas. The chain link fence creates a border with salvaged vintage handrail. The vintage handrail adds a layer of textural past to the modern, spare bridge structure. The safety fence is taller and will be more sculptural because of the scalloped diagram.
  • The fence will be dressed or treated to enhance its visual presence. The fence will be sequined with glass paillettes. The flat glass orbs will have a welded ring to the chainlink attached to the outside of the structure.
  • Landscape will be mannered: in pots, on trellis's, in beds formal, simple and somewhat theatrical. The landscape bed can be maintained easily. Native plants will be used if possible.
  • The lighting is comprised of simple streetlights that are repeated. The lights are pedestrian scale at the Ellsworth Ave side. As the lights move toward Eastside shopping area they increase in height to 30'.I would like to work with the simple fixture to produce a reflected color.

Buenos Aires

In April 2007, we went to Buenos Aires, fell in love with it and bought a vintage apartment which we plan to go to when we can. Here it is under renovation.
