SHEILA KLEIN
WAY
South Tacoma Way, Tacoma, Washington, 2018
Steel, cable, obstruction markers, walk signs
27' x 73' x 3'
A central hub is formed in the heart of Tacoma's business district by adding a set of elements to the two crosswalks at 54th and 56th Street. The crosswalks are highlighted with oversized finials. A string of obstruction markers acts as a set of pearls for the street. Starting at the top is a finial, then a painted form on the pole that extends the sculptural form from the finial to the standard pole. The necklaces, made from obstruction markers, are strung across the street in two intersections a block apart. Obstruction markers are used to bring attention to overhead wires.
