MAKING UP STORIES & LOOKING AT THINGS SIDEWAYS
i.e. gallery, Edison, Washington, 2018
Two-person exhibition with Ries Niemi featuring works inspired by Buenos Aires, including an installation on the exterior of the gallery.
While walking around the streets in Argentina, I was struck by the grilles that cover so many things - how they frame a view and form another layer of architecture. These bricolaged works are inspired by both the basic materials of the street and also the random things one sees while walking. The materials are things I brought home from Buenos Aires that are everywhere; awnings, burlap, plastic mesh, bandera colored material (blue and white stripes as the Argentine flag), media somber (shade cloth) and impossibly amazing and obsolete things made by hand: lace, hankies, towels, napkins, etc. These small constructions are a snapshot of textures and vistas.
